چکیده

Geological carbon dioxide storage must be designed such that the CO2 cannot escape from the rock formation into which it is injected, and often simple stratigraphic trapping is insufficient. CO2 can be trapped in the pore space as droplets surrounded by water through capillary trapping. X-ray microtomography was used to image, at a resolution of 6.6 m, the pore-scale arrangement of these droplets in three carbonates and two sandstones. The pressures and temperatures in the pore space were representative of typical storage formations, while chemical equilibrium was maintained between the CO2, brine and rock arbon capture and storage

SPE 166498 Reservoir-Condition Pore-Scale Imaging Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

We present the results from a novel experimental apparatus that can image – at the micron scale – fluid displacements at elevated temperatures and pressures. The images are acquired using a micro-CT scanner (Xradia Versa 500) that has been adapted to allow core flood experiments to be conducted in situ, allowing continuous imaging at resolutions down to around 1 μm. A small cylindrical core – a...

Capillary trapping in sandstones and carbonates: Dependence on pore structure

[1] Residual non-wetting phase saturation and wetting-phase permeability were measured in three limestones and four sandstones ranging in porosity from 0.13 to 0.28 and in absolute permeability from 2 10 15 to 3 10 12 m. This paper focuses on the residual state established by waterflooding at low capillary number from minimum water saturation achieved using the porous plate technique, which yie...

Pore-scale imaging of geological carbon dioxide storage under in situ conditions

[1] While geological carbon dioxide (CO2) storage could contribute to reducing global emissions, it must be designed such that the CO2 cannot escape from the porous rock into which it is injected. An important mechanism to immobilize the CO2, preventing escape, is capillary trapping, where CO2 is stranded as disconnected pore-scale droplets (ganglia) in the rock, surrounded by water. We used X-...

Pore Scale Observations of Trapped CO2 in Mixed-Wet Carbonate Rock: Applications to Storage in Oil Fields.

Geologic CO2 storage has been identified as a key to avoiding dangerous climate change. Storage in oil reservoirs dominates the portfolio of existing projects due to favorable economics. However, in an earlier related work ( Al-Menhali and Krevor Environ. Sci. Technol. 2016 , 50 , 2727 - 2734 ) , it was identified that an important trapping mechanism, residual trapping, is weakened in rocks wit...
